Stephen, although a Norman king, was from the House of Blois. He seized
the crown on Henry I's death from Henry's only daughter Matilda, the
only legitimate son William having drowned in 1120. War followed,
the outcome of which was that on Stephen's death the crown would revert
to Matilda's line and her son Henry, which it did in 1154. |
