The
Isle of Man lies in the Irish Sea off the north-west coast of England.
During history the island's location has meant it has been home to
Irish, Scottish, English and even Norse settlers. It is now self-governing
with its own legislature and capital at Douglas.
The
Celtic language of Manx
was spoken on the island and, like Scottish Gaelic, had developed
out of Irish Gaelic. The language became extinct towards the end of
the 20th century. |

The
singer-songwriter Barry Gibb was born
as Barry Alan Crompton Gibb in Douglas in 1946. In 1949 his twin brothers
Robin and Maurice
were born in the same hospital. In 1955 the family moved to Manchester
where the three brothers formed a group and began performing. In 1958
Andy was born and the same year the
family immigrated to Australia where the three brothers renamed themselves
the
Bee Gees.
In 1967 the Bee Gees returned to England and became one of the most
successful bands of the 1970s peaking with the 1977 film Saturday
Night Fever, whose music defined the disco era and became one
of the best-selling soundtracks ever.
Barry Gibb wrote/co-wrote sixteen songs which reached number one in
the USA. Nine for the Bee Gees, three for his youngest brother Andy
Gibb and four for other artists: Yvonne Elliman (If I Can't Have
You, 1977), Frankie Valli (Grease, 1978), Barbra Streisand
(Woman in Love, 1980), Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton (Islands
in the Stream, 1983).
